Micro Brewery

Tudor Brewery is our own on-site micro brewery, serving our own craft real ales and lagers.

The micro brewery, sometimes referred to as a craft brewery, originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s to describe the new generation of small breweries which focussed on producing traditional cask ale. Although originally used to reflect the size of breweries, the term gradually came to reflect an alternative attitude and approach to brewing of flexibility, adaptability, experimentation and customer service.

The term and trend spread to the United States in the 1980s, where it eventually was used to indicate a brewery that produces fewer than 15,000 barrels of beer annually. In 2007, there were 1,406 regional craft breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs recorded in the United States

Micro breweries are gradually appearing in other countries, such as New Zealand and Australia. They are also flourishing in Canada, mostly on the West Coast and in Ontario. In 1994, Japan's strict tax laws were relaxed allowing smaller micro breweries producing local ales.

Britain now has a large number of small commercial breweries making cask ale, the smallest of which are known as micro breweries and can be found in restricted spaces. The Kings Arms is at the fore of a growing trend for pubs and inns to develop their own micro breweries.
