Sunday 5th October 2008

The Brigitte Beraha Trio

The Brigitte Beraha Group's visit to the Club will be part of its Autumn tour of the UK to promote the new album Flying Dreams.

For those who have not heard Brigitte perform before, the following quote may be of interest - "If sheer talent were the only ingredient needed for success in music, Brigitte would already be up there with the stars. She has a tremendous future to explore, one which we’ll be watching with great expectations”. Dame Cleo Laine and John Dankworth, June 2004

Andy Sheppard honed his skills in the wine bars and jazz clubs of Bristol in the early 1980s, followed by a stint in Paris, where he worked with French bands Lumière and Urban Sax. He returned to the UK in the mid-1980s and released his debut solo album, which was well received and led to him being awarded the Best Newcomer prize at the 1987 British Jazz Awards, followed by the Best Instrumentalist Award in 1988.

Andy Sheppard's second solo album, Introductions In The Dark, was released in 1989. Unusually for a jazz record the album entered the UK pop charts. He was awarded Best Album and Best Instrumentalist in 1989's British Jazz Awards, became the subject of television documentaries for both the BBC and HTV, and toured the world.

Andy Sheppard formed his first big band, the Soft On The Inside Band, in 1990 for an album of the same name. The band featured many notable players, including drummer Han Bennick, trumpet player Claude Deppa and trombonist Gary Valente. The band developed into In Co-Motion, which included keyboardist Steve Lodder and bassist Sylvan Richardson.

Andy Sheppard then signed a deal with Blue Note Records, who issued Rhythm Method in 1993. The In Co-Motion band was expanded for this release and known as Big Co-Motion.

Big Co-Motion recorded a live album at London jazz club Ronnie Scott's, which was released by Blue Note in /1994.

The Bannau Trio

Nia Lynn returns with her Bannau Trio to the Club as part of the extensive tour to launch their new CD.

The review of Nia's visit to Black Mountain Jazz in June 2007 included the following quote - "Singing a selection of jazz standards, Nia showed that vocally she has great individuality, but at the same time she allowed us to hear her influences with subtle vocal inflections".

Nia will again be joined by the masterly Ross Stanley on piano and tenor saxophonist Samuel Crockatt.
