Croeso .... Welcome

The newly refurbished Kings Arms in St Johns Square is a late 16th Century coaching inn, giving a fine example of what much of Abergavenny would have looked like before formal Georgian modifications. There are earlier remnants of medieval and pre-medieval dwellings beneath the 13th Century town wall now incorporated into the Tudor restaurant at the rear.

In 1625, Charles II on his flight from defeat at Naseby stayed at the coaching inn and again much later in his flights from the Parliamentarians. His room, believed to be overlooking Tudor Street and Nevill Street, is suitably fitted. In the 19th Century, a sculptor was commissioned by the then landlord and town brewer, one Thomas Delafield, to carve a coat of arms to commemorate the royal patronage. This is now restored over the front of building.

In 1817 the King & 15th Hussars on their return from Waterloo, were billeted in the Kings Arms, to police what had become a frontier society with radical unrest in the industrial heartland of Merthyr, Tredegar and much of South Wales. Their stay was evidently acceptable, as upon leaving they inscribed with a sword on the ceiling joist above the bar "Good Quartering Forever" Hall Troop 24.

This lovely old inn would not be complete without its resident ghosts. The guide books report two or three active ghosts which haunt the inn. Most memorable perhaps is the White Lady, who was a servant girl taken advantage of by a destitute clergyman! Her untimely death has left her spirit to walk the boards of the inn ever since. Past landladies all report sightings and occurrences. Most recently during the restoration workmen experienced continuous goings on with doors openings, tools being mislaid and "orb" sightings.
